I have a degree in mathematics from the National University of Colombia (Bogotá, Colombia, 2006), a PhD in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Granada (2015) and I have been a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Spanish Research Center (CSIC) during five years and now I work as a senior cientist at the Spanish Oceanography Institute (Cádiz office). I have come to Spain with a grant from the Carolina Foundation to study a master's degree in Physics and Mathematics with a specialization in Biomathematics at the University of Granada, focusing on the theory of stochastic processes for the development of new models for the analysis of biological sequences in functional spaces (Functional Data Analysis). Another grant-contract from an Spanish regional administration (Junta de Andalucía) makes me move towards applied mathematics to fisheries science, focusing my work on the mathematical-statistical modeling of the dynamics of commercially exploited fish populations. In this second stage my work focuses mainly on the following research lines related to the sustainability of fisheries resources: Modeling the dynamics of fish populations incorporating the effect of fishing and the environment, stock assessment, development of tools for decision making and analysis of management strategies from an ecological and socio-economic point of view. Among my most important publications is the simulation of an insurance policy for the anchovy fishery in the Gulf of Cádiz, chosen as "Editor's choice" in the ICES Journal of Marine Sciences and which also includes an interactive web application developed in R (shiny app). I have participated in three European projects: Ecoknows, MareFrame and FarFish. I have also conducted scientific advisory tasks collaborating with the Spanish Oceanographic Institute, which is in charge of evaluating the anchovy in the Gulf of Cádiz, my main task on this was to develop the integrated mathematical-statistical model that is being used as a reference (in June 2018) for the scientific advice of the stock. Thanks to this collaboration I have been included as an official national member of the ICES group of evaluation WGHANSA (Working Group on Southern Horse Mackerel, Anchovy, and Sardine).

To be

... or not to be?

To be, or not to be–that is the question: Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep– No more–and by a sleep to say we... Read More

Dear diary

What is it with that Mary girl? Dragging me to school every day. As if I had a choice. What you don’t hear in those nursery rhymes is that she starves me if I don’t go to school with her; it’s the only way I can stay alive! I’m thinking... Read More
